I don’t really like this incursion in AI territory. On-device translation is OK but this AI chatbot sidebar should be an extension and not something Mozilla should spend time/money/effort on.

This article reads like an ad.

    Also

For me, the best change in Firefox 130 is Firefox Labs. This new section in Settings makes it easy to opt-in to try-out experimental features in development for future releases. If you’ve used Firefox Nightly builds you may be familiar with this page.

A handful of ‘experiments’ are offered in this release, including the handy auto-open picture-in-picture option I wrote about recently, and the ability to access an AI chatbot of your choice from a sidebar, or selecting text and clicking the sparkle emoji.

Hm. I’m not too excited for more AI integration but it’s optional so honestly, why not. I haven’t tested it yet so this may already be the case, but I really hope you can add self-hosted chatbots. That’s really the only way I’d ever use this feature.

Also, from a business perspective, this can act as a neat competitor to Edge’s AI inegration, especially if you can use a self-hosted LLM with knowledge of your company’s internal data. I can definitely see some (emphasis on some, however) value here.
