The head of the climate conference… Is the head of an oil company. Oh my gosh this is like a Ricky and Morty episode
COP
In UAE
Conflict of interest for Money
It was in front of us all along
wait, were people expecting something to come out of yet another climate conference?
repeat after me: we end capitalism, or we die.
To be fair, if we die, capitalism goes with us.
We figured out the cheat code
I didn’t have much hope. however, after seeing yet another record hot year, I thought maybe this time people in power would do, or at least pledge to do something.
now I’ve truly accepted my fate. that I, along with billion others whose role in climate change is practically zero, will bear the most(provided we live that long).
repeat after me: we end capitalism, or we die.
I agree, it takes a lot of copium to believe that all of this “phasing out by 2050” shit itsnt straight pandering. Its like a smoker with lung cancer saying they’ll quit in a few years. We are hopelessly addicted to our lifestyles that depend on fossil fuels. The only one thats ultimately going to shift our society is mother nature when she eradicates us through famine, extreme weather and chaos
i’m sure they’ll think of something new on the 28th one
Serious question…how do we end capitalism?
Like, even a near-term steps to take would be sufficient. I’m just feeling a bit run down these days. It seems like when we, the MAJORITY PEOPLE, get a win… we’re slapped in the face with ten other losses. Fascism is on the rise, inflation is insane, housing prices are insane, here in the US there is a legitimate chance Trump might win again which is extremely disheartening.
We organize. Lenin literally wrote a manual outlining the basic general steps, and those were used successfully all around the world by the working class to take over the state. It is also a great way of fighting fascism.
We organize worker unions, then start using our power of collective bargaining and strikes to force them to concede more and more. All that while building a paralel socialist party and bottom up councils to direct the decisions, this party will eventually take over the state. In an ideal world this can be done nonviolently (it did initially happen peacefully in russia) but the elites will resist so we have to be prepared and strong enough. Along the way we may need to arm ourselves, save up on food and necessities to defend against the state violence that will come. For that we need a good chunk of the population onboard but its definetly possible. About half the people in most countries are already convinced voting can only bring the lesser evil so half the battle is done for us.
This is just one way, of course there are several schools of thought on the left about how to do it. Anarchists have an interesting idea of just building the all institutions we need parallel to the state too, although their method never worked on a large countrywide scale, it works pretty well for smaller communes.
You mean the climate summit…… in fucking Dubai? Lol
Dubai isn’t necessarily a bad place per se. Like… “do you like it here outside w/o air conditioning? That’s your average winter in the Antarctic in a few years, if you don’t act.”
Problem is, it’s not done this way…
Not necessarily a bad place, but definitely one with a huge oil industry
Huge? UAE’s blood is oil. It’s a capital of eastern luxury and one of remaining monarchies because they sell oil. They are still a partner to everyone in spite of murdering journalists and whoever they dislike - because they sell oil. They build these absurd skyscapers, ski resorts in a desert, all their places are extremely air-conditioned to be tourists-friendly, all thanks to selling oil. Even including them there is an embarassment, because they grew up that vulgarly unsustainable thanks to oil money. It reads like an Onion article.
Fair enough
I wasn’t arguing with you, but adding to your point (:
Fair enough :)
Did UAE murder journalists? I know Saudi Arabia did.
The latest case I recall is them helping Saudis to kill Jamal Khashoggi. While the killing was on Saudis, AUE put Pegasus on their phones and later detained a lawyer on this case, an american citizen.

Dubai is a great place actually

Yea maybe they could have the climate summit in their fucking outdoor air conditioning soccer field…. There should be plenty of room there, in the whole fucking outdoor air conditioned stadium.
One thing I can say I’m half certain I read that Biden wasn’t going.
He may have had early intel about the summit pres being involved in the drama,
I burn on Biden a lot.
But I’m glad he didn’t go to this one.
This is all you need to understand how little of a shit our leaders actually give about climate change.
How is that any different from all the jesus freaks?
It’s not really, both are bad.
Yeah… you are complaining about a photo ops thingy. I hope you damn well know that this wasn’t just about a coin ritual. But I guess it’s easy to just go hurdurdur over a minor detail. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So?
Probably pancakes.
Okay what else was it?
What a fucking farce. Unless the people take matters into their own hands and topple their governments, nothing will ever happen.
seeing the incumbent party in my home country watering down environmental protection rules to benefit(and later benefit from) crony capitalist friends even as they persecute activists, I think it’s over.
it’s too late for class consciousness.
We are 100% going to suffer, but I think we can still survive as a species if we act quickly.
If worst case scenario comes to fruition it would be sweet to at least not let those bastards live to 100 and die peacefully in their sleep, on their cozy air conditioned beds.
I am not generally pessimistic, but i think it’s just over. We won’t do shit.
i think most people will wake up when hunger and extreme heat comes to knock on their door. im not sure if its gonna be too late by then.
i do see the seeds of revolution starting to germinate, that looks like it will come first.
The problem is you can’t get people to organize and work together if everyone is worried about where to get their next meal. Hell, people can barely even do that now; how much more when that time comes.
That’s exactly when people come to work together. The French Revolution happened because people were starving.
This is too negative. We are making some progress (mostly despite governments). Kurzgesagt has a great video on this that is both based on fact and somewhat hopeful: https://youtu.be/LxgMdjyw8uw?si=K4oUpRAHbGro18We

They’re actually and unironically going to kill us all, aren’t they?
If it turns a profit for them, yeah.
I’m going to call it - The Oil Summit from now on.
Good. We are not doing enough yet. We should blow as much pollution into the air as quickly as possible. And spray as many chemicals on the earth and dump plastic into the oceans as we can.
The sooner we make this planet uninhabitable for human life, the sooner it can begin to regenerate for a future species that will do better.
Humanity, the disease, the parasite, must be completely eradicated.
Eco-fascism is cringe
Not really eco-fascism mor like eco-accelerationism
Same callous disregard for life.
At least eco fascists have regard for non-human life. Eco-accelerationists seem to want all life extinguished
Everything is “cringe” nowadays. Calling things cringe is cringe. nobody gives a shit.
Didn’t ask tho
Neither did they?
I mean… I agree with you. That shit is cringe… but saying “Didn’t ask” to someone who didn’t ask either is pretty cringe too.
I didn’t ask for their weird ass cringe opinion piece
Yes, I understand how publicly accessible social media works.
Saying “No one asked” in a public forum is the dumbest comeback someone can come up with. Do you not understand what Lemmy is? No one is asking anyone for opinions, but adding yours to a conversation is inviting others to add theirs…
You can always find a private instance and only interact with opinions you like.
How tf is a comment like this one which is basically on some ISIS-like kill everyone level beeing upvoted?
Because if there’s one thing lemmy loves, it’s intellectually lazy hyperbole.
Fiction fetishizes the “burn it all down and restart” mentality; but you could stretch imagination to a billion sentient species, even assuming they could ever exist, and I doubt any could make the change and progress humanity has.
It’s not even possible to duplicate the Industrial Revolution before, because the easily accessible fuel is no longer there.
Fixing things is hard and getting consensus on things is hard. Easier to get people to do something when the building is already on fire. However, in the end, it’s better to not light the place on fire just do you don’t have to talk to people.
I’m fine if we eat the rich, though.
I do not think it’s any easier to get people to do things when the building is on fire. People just become more stressed, and make poorer decisions for self-preservation. While you do see people support each other during disasters like floods, it’s not always the case.
Who does this brand of acceleration help? It’s not people, we die from it. Same with all the life. Is it future life that it helps? Why value potential future life over existent present life? Shouldn’t we be working as hard as we can to improve conditions instead of giving up and killing ourselves?
The fastest way to ease the pain of a broken arm is to cut it off at the shoulder, but sometimes the fastest way to do something is the worst way to do it
Their precious economies can’t survive beyond 2050. Damages from climate disasters will be big enough to make every economy shrink and make the Great Depression look like child’s play.
Yeah, let’s kill all humans and leave the Earth a smoking crater so nothing can ever grow here again. That’ll really help the future life.
Anything that goes against capital will be refuted in our current system
