Nothing has released its latest skinned Android 13 OS for the Phone 1, handing down updated monochrome aesthetics and other software features from the newer Nothing Phone 2.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
Nothing officially announced the Nothing OS 2.0 release on Discord, letting owners of the Phone 1 know that “exciting new features, enhanced customization, and improved functionality” are coming to the early adopters.
As covered last week, this Nothing OS 2.0 update is based on Android 13, which is what currently ships on Nothing’s latest device.
Nothing also has a beta OS release that runs atop Android 14, which works on Phone 1.
Nothing OS 2.0 for Phone 1 includes the “monochromatic visual identity” the company has heavily leaned into for its latest device.
It includes new Quick Settings widgets that let you flip switches, like shutting off the rear Glyph lights when you’re in a theater.
There’s also the new “essential” Glyph notifications where designated important alerts will keep persistent lights lit up on the rear.
The original article contains 237 words, the summary contains 136 words. Saved 43%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
Looks great! pity the OS is not de-googled
Say what you want about privacy but having Google apps is more convenient for the average user. Meanwhile, users who want to degoogle can do so since it’s Android.
I have not looked into the OS used in depth. de-googlifyig the supplied OS is no meanial task. I understand of course they want to cater for a broad public. The phone looks great and no reproach to it or it’s OS. would have been on my wishlist if a de-googled rom would be available.
That’s a plus for many of us.
Moar downvotes! it’s obviously a horrible thing to not want google on a phone! moar downvotes I tell you!
I wish nothing phone supported USB c video out. It’s sad that it seems like only Samsung does.
And Motorola
And Sony
Sony is definitely on my consideration list in the future
also works on my oneplus 7 prp, too bad they stopped making good phones, still don’t know what I’ll switch to when this one eventually dies.
Looks like some neat features have been added; wife’s using a Nothing Phone 1, will ask her to check for updates!
if im using a fairphone, what would be the advantage of using a nothing phone instead?
Nothing
Only advantage I can think of is the faster soc and more ram on the more expensive models.
Fairphone 5 uses the Qualcomm QCM6490 (equivalent spec to a snapdragon 778g, which is in the nothing phone 1) and has 8gb of ram. Nothing Phone 2 has snapdragon 8+ gen 1 and 12gb of ram on the $699 model, 8gb of ram on the base model that costs $599. Fairphone 5 also has a micro SD card slot coupled with the 256gb of storage, while the nothing phone 2 doesn’t have any microsd card slot and starts with 128gb of storage on the base model.
The fairphone 5 is more expensive, but you’re paying for the ability to actually repair it and 8 years of support.
I already have a nothing phone 2 and I’m outside the return period, but if I didn’t and had the choice between the two today, ngl I’d pay the extra for the more sustainable fairphone 5. Yes it costs more, but it’d pay off in the long-run with repairability and long-term support.
i see, thank you for the detailed info
