asklemmy is not a support channel. I haven’t found any macOS related support channel on lemmy and while Im searching the internet for macOS forums, Id like to know if you have any recommendation. Some questions I have are:

how to reinstall an OCLP unsupported macOS security copy from a usb stick to the original partition

Would it make sense to ask an apple vendor to change the notebook’s keyboard? It’s Portuguese, I want an American keyboard)

Where do I get more memory, a new battery and can I change both things at home or is it all glued together and the only way to do it is through a vendor?

I have experience using oclp. The steps are listed on the website, and when you download the patching app, it guides you through the steps, too. But read through the site first. It’s relatively simple and most of the complicated work is automated.

But changing out the internal parts of any MacBook after 2015 will be a mess of soldered- and glued-in parts that it’s best to get changed out by a vendor trained to do it.

No idea about OCLP unfortunately. But I got a battery for my mid 2015 macbook off Amazon. Changing it isn’t hard but you’ll need a funky 5 lobed screwdriver. The 2015 and I assume onward memory is soldered to the board, so you’re probably stuck, although an independent repair shop could probably swap boards or something. The keyboard is integrated into the top plate according to apple, it was over $200 for the part last time I checked on eBay.

And don’t even get me started on the SSD :-( They are kind of a pain in the dick… but so sexy inside.

One of my friends mentioned he was downloading pre-patched MacOSs from the internet archive, so that might be worth a look.

    Good luck.

your 2014 mbp (11,1?) either came with 8gb or 16gb of ram from the factory. there’s no way to the user to add more after the fact. you could pay a microsoldering shop to add more, but that’s not usually worth the cost. you could have someone drop in a replacement logic board with 16gb already on there but that’s like $150.

it’s a decent job, but here’s the replacement keyboard. That same site has the battery and it makes sense to do them at once since you gotta pull the battery anyway.

the battery is glued in, so if you’re not comfortable dealing with that then a repair shop is your best bet to install a replacement keyboard and battery.

you have a mac, so maybe a good place to ask for help with opencore is the lemmy.ml apple community.

e: i think i understand what youre asking about the opencore legacy patcher… you want to make a bootable patched install media but you can’t because you can’t boot into macos to make it, right? you’ll either need to start back from recovery boot from square one and lose your linux install or have someone with a mac either make you an opencore patched install media for your model or supported vanilla install media (in your case i think that’s macos 11 big sur) that you can install and make an opencore patcher to upgrade from.
