I know there are cases where Dems have sat back and endorsed independents (Bernie Sanders being the most prominent example) - this feels a little too much like backroom dealing to me, but on the other hand I recall a case where a guy was actually kicked out of (a local) office, but who ran in the by-election and won because the other two candidates who were running split the vote. So the guy got re-elected with just a plurality.
