Today is a very sad day. Apparently, cake wallet has made the asenine decision to abandon their fdroid repository for this other app store called accrescent Which is a centralized store very focused on security but has a central point of failure and can pull apps at any time they wish for any reason or no reason at all or succumb to government take down requests.

Edit: A direct quote from a chat from tux on the cake wallet team.

“Maybe I didn’t make it clear enough the reason we abandoned it was because it stopped letting us update. It broke, and we haven’t been able to fix it and don’t care enough too”

Edit 2: Some more color was given on the issue in today’s Monerotopia episode and apparently it has something to do with a flutter update that could not be avoided but caused breaking issues. I will say that I hope they can re-establish the repository in the future.

If cake doesn’t want to be on fdroid… That’s concerning.

    Time to find a replacement

Fdroid builds apps from source, and if the developers want to make reproducible builds the developers sign their own build artifacts and fdroid verifys the source matched the artifact.

The irony they announced this on x…

Not to mention how unprofessional it is to just shutdown a distribution mechanism without notice. That’s highschool drama

Cakewallet used a third party repository, it has never been on the main f-droid repository 3rd party repos can contain proprietary apps as well, like Accrescent

They had their own repository, but yes, I agree. Just shutting down a distribution method, because they didn’t care enough to try to fix it, is bullshit. Monerujo It is nice, but it’s not as good with accessibility, which is unfortunate for screen reader users, mysu Is not far enough along to be ready as a replacement for daily use, and stack duo has a shitcoin called bitcoin and bitcoin frost. Really, how hard is it to just get a Unix principle Monero wallet?

Just use obtainium and begin to move away from app stores. Any git repository on any server (doesn’t have to be github, could be a gitlab, gitea or forgejo server) that does compiled APK releases for your hardware can be used as a source repo with obtainium, no need for all the overhead any of the app stores require.

I’ve had problems with obtainium. Primarily, if there’s multiple apps in a repository, it doesn’t do a good job of distinguishing ones from the other. And quite frankly, it looks like crap compared to an app store. So the functionality just isn’t as nice. With a proper app store you get the description and a nice install button and pictures and all that other good stuff where otherwise with obtainium you just get the download itself. It’s just not nearly as user friendly, or at least it was not the last time I used it. It was a pain in the ass, although maybe it has improved since then. It also had some accessibility issues which made it harder for me to use it because I rely on a screen reader a lot.

      From accrescent faq:

Do apps have to be open source?

"Apps do not need to be open-source to be submitted to Accrescent. Although open-source software provides additional transparency and can make it easier for users to check overall code quality, it is not inherently more secure or private than closed-source software. Likewise, proprietary software is not inherently less secure or private than open-source software. Since Accrescent is focused on security and privacy it wouldn’t make sense for it to restrict developers to a specific source model.

However, Accrescent recognizes the benefits of open-source and so is open-source itself. In the future, apps in the store will additionally be able to be tagged as open-source and filtered for in the client."

      https://accrescent.app/faq#open-source

Edit: That is concerning. But what is more concerning to me is the fact that they can pull apps for political reasons or because of government pressure or for any other damn reason they please. And this is not good with governments attacking privacy and becoming more authoritarian.

Well, that’s sad. But you can use other waller for this, for example, Monerujo. It has swaps directly in the wallet.

I do already use monerujo. However, I don’t trust the built-in swap functionality of the apps at all. I go to TrokaDoor, myself, and do the swap. Honestly, how hard is it to do a Monero wallet that only has Monero and doesn’t have a bunch of extra crap like swaps built in? I don’t want them. I stopped using cake wallet for a long time because they just had too much functionality and their app was huge. Their app has gotten less huge now which is better but they still have a ton of functionality in their app that I never use.
