Hello! Im Trying out peertube and have some unanswered questions. Iv been having some troubles figuring out how to use that platform. One problem is that it takes much time to find an instance with open registration. But its Ok, not a big problem.

So I registered, but what is happening? Where is content from other instances? I cannot simply find my fav channels from other instances just by typing the name. But if you try to search with @channel@instance.name it surprisingly works. Well, may be my channel should be visible from other instances, right? Looks like not either.

But its not completely broken, some channels visible from X instance on Z instance, but on the other side Z channels on X instance undiscoverable.

Each instance also has different tranding and discover pages, which looks weird to me.

In other words, how do we know as content creators, if our channels can be discovered from other instances? And its not just about using Sepia Search (that only works if user knows what they are searching), but also displaying content on different instances in “Tranding”, “Discover” and “Recently added” pages.

Another concern is about privacy.

We all know about P2P, and that when you connect to peers you reveal your IP address. How peertube protects users from stealing leaking their IP addresses?

Thank you! :3

    You can disable P2P.

You will only see content from other instances, if your instance federates with them.

However, some instances allow “global search”, which means you can practically find everything through search, from all the other instances.

It’s also possible to subscribe to channels from other instances, even though your instance does not federate with said instance.

If you go to the About > Network page, you can see which instances is federated with yours.

This is how the settings look like for a PeerTube admin, regarding global search and subscribing to remote channels:

I think if you start typing in text to the search bar, it slides out and gives you the options to either search locally or globally.

Yeah, you can’t “steal” IP addresses. Someone can see what the IP address is of the internet connection you’re using. But that’s it. And without further info it’s just a number that tells them your internet service provider’s name and maybe the state you’re in… Unless you’re a streamer with a fanbase that likes to see you getting swatted, or watch illegal content, I’d say you don’t need to worry about your IP at all.

But you can disable P2P if you like in the settings if you like. That works even without logging in.

I’m using peertube quite a lot to follow the Linux Experiment on Tilvids and it works really well.

It’s true that finding other creators to follow looks difficult and the search result aren’t giving you much.

It’s a shame as it makes me keep relying on YouTube for everything gaming (PlayStation) related when I would want to use it less.

Maybe it’s gonna become easier when the upcoming mobile app is launched.

As an PeerTube instance admin ( I self host mine) the global search need to be enabled by admin otherwise it will only search content of local instance though it only affects search not direct query or user channels URLs. Trending system usually is based on channels that are being subscribed by users of specific instance. about P2P it’s possible to disable it by admin instance to get direct connection without sharing.
