I mean, if you want to talk about effort, you could take the time to repudiate all the Trump pardons and show how they benefitted the country.

5·2 days agoAlso, in my area I see a lot of beautiful old pre-1950s houses get torn down to be replaced by a dozen shoebox condominiums stacked three high.
Talk to anyone who was old enough to vote for Clinton.
It wasn’t a big dramatic floor fight in Congress. People started talking about doing away with the ATF, and the idea seemed to be gaining momentum, and then it just…vanished.
I like to post that in 1960, we had a minimum wage of $1.00/hour and the average US home cost $11,000.00
Whenever I do, someone will point out that houses today are, on average, bigger.
They never mention tiny homes and six people sharing a two bedroom apartment…
1·3 days agoI see no advantage to students using AI and many problems.
Unless and until I see an advantage to a new tech, I hold my reserve. Obviously, a typewriter will give you better copy than a quill pen, and a word processor beats both.
But all three of those require the writer to come up with their own ideas.
This is one of my favorite stories.
The ATF completely screwed up the raid on the Branch Davidian Church in Waco back in 1993. It was indenfesnable and a lot of people started saying that the Agency should be abolished and its responsibilities moved to the FBI.
“Small government” GOPs blocked any mention of the idea, because they were worried about having the FBI looking into gun crimes.
And at the time it was true.
If all the knowledge you have in your society can be memorized and recited, writing it down means it can be changed.
On the other hand, if you have a society where you know of that there are over 500,000 types of beetles, it might be a better idea to come up with a way to record that information without memorization.
Just because an idea is new/old doesn’t mean it’s good/bad.
Things have to be judged on their own merits.
A while back, someone suggested that only women should be allowed to own handguns, and that the guns should all be painted baby pink.

None of these ideas are my original thoughts. I’m paraphrasing a bunch of other folks.
Similar things happened to music in the 1960s and movies in the 1970s. The old system had fallen apart and no one in charge had any idea what to do. The only thing they could think of was to throw cash at anything that moved and hope for the best.
That’s why in the 1960s you could have bands as diverse as Frank Zappa and Bob Dylan, and Sha-Na-Na and Iron Butterfly etc etc all getting a chance. They guys [it was 99% men] who understood Sinatra and Bing Crosby just went with whatever the kids seemed interested in.
Same thing in the 1970s with movies. ‘Star Wars’ was a giant gamble, but the studio heads figured they had to try something.
Cut to today. Entertainment industry has figured out how to keep the machine moving. We’ll keep getting Taylor Swift and Marvel movies until the next generation stops paying.
Obviously, this is only scratching the surface.
It’s too bad you didn’t get to post that on Juneteenth.
By that logic, we shouldn’t have to teach kids to walk, because they’ll be able to strap on an exoskeleton or sit in a floating chair. Heck, we will be able to make Dune style suits and never have to teach them to control their poopage.
There’s no growth without struggle.
They are all pretty much variations on the same joke.
