  • Thank you. I’m sorry. There’s a vocal segment in spaces like this that goes beyond trying to make sure Americans don’t manifest destiny the internet (totally fair) and crosses the line into attacking anything about us (not just the many, many, justified parts). I may have overreacted, but yes, living in a country where calling a suicide hotline could result in being shot by a police officer heightens my emotional response here. Thank you for being understanding.

  • If you link to suicide hotlines, mention which ones can send cops (under the guise of EMS) to your door without your consent. (For instance, I’d never suggest 988 because of this.) That way, users know you know what’s up and that they can trust the group’s info. And given cops’ record of shooting mentally ill people in crisis, it’s pretty important.

  • Some search engines and social media platforms make at least half-assed efforts to prevent or add warnings to this stuff, because anorexia in particular has a very high mortality rate, and age of onset tends to be young. The people advocating AI models be altered to prevent this say the same about other tech. It’s not techphobia to want to try to reduce the chances of teenagers developing what is often a terminal illness, and AI programmers have the same responsibility on that as everyone else,

  • Scattering a few 5-minute resistance band exercises into my day. They’re easier, more convenient, and less dangerous than weights, they can provide a workout in small spaces, and they offer feedback that can help improve proprioception (which is an issue for me). And by doing a set here and a set there, I don’t resent working out, because I never have to spend an extended chunk of time bored af. I’ve never been evangelical about an exercise before. I have disabilities that can make working out difficult. But given my recent expeiences, I think government-funded resistance band sets with QR codes for free online instruction videos should be available at every public library in the country on request.

TL; DR: Resistance bands build strength and improve health with minimal risk of injury, and their convenience makes it easy to spread workouts over the day to avoid boredom and resentment.
