If there’s one thing I learned, it’s that gaming companies will promise you anything to get on your good side. Take statements like these with the biggest grain of salt.
They can control your watch time better if you make less decisions. Just be a good little brainless consumer and scroll through endless amounts of bullshit instead of specifically finding one video, then doing something else.
It started with autoplay, wormed it’s way into search feature, and now it’s all over home and subscriptions.
I recently watched the documentary this article talks about on why Gollum had to fail the way it did. It was a very informative piece, questioning a lot of the devs and the company in question, and receiving in-depth answers from them (sometimes anonymous).
It boiled down to exactly what you would expect. Overworked developers and artists, who regularly were subjected to crunch, while also being criminally underpaid (some of them even weren’t considered real employees and just voluntary interns, so the company could dodge german minimum wage).
None of them made a bad videogame on purpose, they were just insanely underfunded, not experienced enough in this new genre and the new engine and on top of that, the rights to the LotR IP were time-limited, so they had to release it sooner or later.
The “apology” that was tweeted out, was actually sent out without any of the devs input or knowledge, by their parent company “nacon”. And yes, ChatGPT was likely used for it.
No thank you, AITA is a toxic guilty pleasure, that I want to seek out actively if I’m in the mood for it, not see it on my feed regularly. It is the worst kind of form social media can take. If I see it anywhere on the fediverse, I’d immediately block it.

Nur weil du mit etwas unkomfortabel bist musst du deine Werte nicht auf andere ausweiten (in diesem Fall eine amerikanische Website). Es ist irgendwie eine Umgewöhnung, aber gleichzeitig auch mal frischer Wind. Hab letztens einen Post gesehen der Discord kritisiert hat für die gezwungene Telefonnummer-Verifikation und die besten Antworten waren “Warum nutzt du Discord? Datenhölle.”
Ist mir persönlich vorher so gar nicht in den Sinn gekommen, dass Discord ebenfalls nicht das gelbe vom Ei ist.

I didn’t really closely follow Diablo 4, but I was under the impression that all the monetization currently is only vanity outfits, without gameplay influencing changes?
Or did they already put in P2W elements?

alrighty, did some research, seems like the monetization is split two-ways:
The classic scummy rotating in-game shop with its own premium currency with overpriced vanity items that do not influence gameplay (has no reason to be in a full price title).
The battle pass with its supposedly 80 hour grind (in which you can pay more money to rank up faster). The battle pass already includes gameplay influencing effects (more xp, longer potions,…) but those appearently also apply to the free version. Still scummy though, they’re already loosening the promise of no P2W. Give them enough time, they’ll get there.
kbin has different problems. There is a “random” magazine that is just a collection of random posts, and it is featured on the sidebar with no option to turn it off. It sometimes randomly features porn.

I saw a lot of discussion in the comments about their workers pay, but honestly, they make a great product. Wouldn’t wanna be counting pennies in someone elses pockets. I donated a one time 25 bucks, I hope they will continue to ask for donations whenever they are in dire need of server running money.
