I have seen the picture before, but it wasn’t until now that I figured out the Helmholtz double entendre.
Helmholtz resonation is a way to enhance certain frequencies by blowing air into a cavity shaped to resonate with the desirable frequencies, named after German scientist Hermann von Helmholtz.
Helm means helmet in German. Holtz means wood in German (nice name: wooden helmet?) but in most other languages it resembles the word “hold” making this a helmet held Helmholtz resonator. Say it fast.
The purpose is literally described as both.

It’s always a resistor. Planned obsolescence is basically putting a too small resistor somewhere. The parts they make for repair shops are usually better, so if you do take the time to swap a print, you will have a better appliance afterwards for a fraction of the cost of a new shitty machine.
Soldering the specific resistor can be done too, but for anyone who doesn’t have a stock of resistors and soldering tools/skill it’s usually a easier and just as cheap to get new print if they’re available.
The music doesn’t have to be completely synthesized… Most early computers would simply reuse the audio snippets as “samples”, and program the pitch and timing in a “tracker”
Listening to the Flappy Birds music, which I admit that I did, then all of the music could be done in a tracker, even if it might not have been originally. It’s a bit of a lost art form, but there are several kilobytes to save!
Personally, I have been considering making a HTML5 game, including the sunvox DLL, to make it really easy to put tiny yet advanced music files into a cross platform browsable game. Haven’t gotten around to it though…

I believe (without knowing for sure) that you could make a similar game much smaller by “rendering” the music and some of the graphics.
I think the last step of understanding the issue is difficult because it requires admitting that their current belief and way of life is not optimal for themselves.
Everyone or almost everyone thinks highly of their own decision skills or at least that they do their best. They believe they can make good choices and that they can either outsmart or work harder than others. The truth is that, maybe they can, but there’s very little choice in how it’s rewarded. The believable lie is that work is compensated fairly, and once someone has put half a life into this lie, it’s difficult and soul crushing to admit that it’s plain wrong. It may cause frustration and anger, which doesn’t solve it. A solution isn’t evident or maybe it seems out of reach, causing more frustration, causing more anger. It’s a lot easier to take out anger on people than fighting a system. And especially in groups, it’s easier to point at smaller minority groups, because their own group is stronger or have more votes, so it’s actually doable. They get a relief for the frustration by believing that they’re doing something about their issue. It won’t work though. It’s similar to being bullied in school and then thinking it will help to take it out on the younger kids, instead of confronting the older bully.
It takes courage to fight upwards. Having been through unionisation efforts I can assure you that people living from one paycheck to the next are absolutely not courageous.
In regards to news, it’s also a lot easier to simply choose the news that keeps presenting their existing belief.

The decline mentioned in the title is the current emmisions. The article goes on to explain it like this:
Locally, Europe and America have lowered their emmisions in the recent years, but global emmisions have still rised due to China emitting even more.
This June however, China’s emmisions have also decreased, so it might be a sign of a peak being reached.
Energy consumption is still increasing, but renewable sources provide enough for that, and it’s economical the best option, so the rising demand does not cause more emmisions.
Personally, I’m afraid it is too soon to tell. I also wonder where all the drilled oil and mined coal goes, because if there is an actual decline in fossil fuel usage, we’d be hearing from the oil companies and experience lower gas prices etc. Any fossil that is mined or pumped up is going to get burned, so I’d really like to see a decline in fossil extractions before celebrating.
Also, in order to address the atmospheric CO2 levels, we need something entirely different. Forests and CO2 capture etc., which have a long way to go still.
