Instead of just doing what I want to do, I’m stuck either doing plumbing work to hold my values and pass them around, or I’m casting things back and forth where I know things are correct but the compiler doesn’t.

    I hate this attitude.

Instead of doing what you want to do? Dude, unless you’re a hobbyist, you’re being paid to do what your company wants you to do; i.e., it’s not about what you want.

Stuck doing plumbing work? Yeah, nobody likes plumbing, but we all know it’s necessary. When you’ve got your proverbial shit backing up onto your floor because you cheaped out on plumbing, cry to me then.

If you’re casting things back and forth, you’re doing it wrong. Spend a day or two and build yourself a solid, consistent foundation, plan ahead, and you won’t be casting things back and forth.

And no, you obviously don’t know better than your compiler, you arrogant sack of sh…

Anyway, get over yourself already and just do your damn job better.

  • Doubt we have two or three elections left in us.

Look, I’m right there with you and this defeatist feeling. You and me by ourselves can’t do shit. But guess what? There’s millions of us. And for decades it’s been beaten into our heads that we are powerless; that we are nothing because we are not rich.

There was a time where there was a group of people who were treated far worse than we’re being treated now. They had so much less than us, and got treated so much worse than us. Yet somehow, they fought back. And while they’re still fighting, they’ve made huge inroads with the status quo that it’s left its mark for the rest of time.

If they can do that, then the least we can do is scare the shit out of a bunch of idjits at the DNC.

  • Yeah it doesn’t work that way bro.

Take the most debilitating pain you’ve ever endured in your life, amp it up to “11”, and then live with it every single day from here until you die. 24/7.

Then when you think you might have a handle on managing it, have people like yourself make such dismissive comments on how you should dedicate your life to some “random cause” instead.

  • Box breathing.

Box breathing involves four basic steps, each lasting 4 seconds:

    1. breathing in
    2. holding the breath
    3. breathing out
    4. holding the breath

It takes some getting used to, so you’ll be distracted at first having to concentrate on your breathing.

I also like to meditate by emptying my mind and thinking about a giant, unlit room with a spotlight on a chair that I’m sitting in. Whenever my mind wanders to anywhere but there, I force myself to bring it back and only think about me sitting in that chair. I’m neither happy, sad, nor mad. I’m just existing in the chair; breathing and existing.

And if all else fails: don’t panic. Grab a towel and stick your thumb out. Maybe you’ll get lucky and catch a ride on a Vogon ship. And most importantly, “On no account allow a Vogon to read poetry at you.”
