Hazel@lemmy.blahaj.zonetoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•How long will people be in denial that america is now a fascist regime? You all really going to wait until trumps third term until you come to terms with it, arent you?1·7 days agoMaybe I’m misunderstanding the context of the image. Are you agreeing with the people in the image or saying they’re in denial by acting as though ICE should be held to the law?

Literally fold and accept fascism?
Because that seems to be the narrative you’re pushing, which is the polar opposite of constructive in this situation.
Super weird and suspect that every thread seems to be full of people saying this is normal. That this is just how it is, that it’s been going on forever, and that anyone who has an issue with it is being unrealistic. Really, really weird. Almost like they’re cryptofascists.
HMMMMMMMM.

This is valid and identifiable!
I have a reasonable sized freezer, not a huge one, but I feel like if I put a bag of ice in it I’d have very little space. Ice cube trays will leave you with more room.
I buy stuff that lasts. For bread, I find that rye takes weeks longer than white or wheat to start going bad, and bagels last ages too. I make smoothies with mostly frozen fruit. For dinner stuff, if I’m not feeling like cooking I either buy things I’m going to eat in the next few days or I get these sealed precooked things from Aldi that are great and keep well. Coconut milk also tends to keep better than cow milk and lately I’ve realized I greatly prefer it.
About the only things that are super perishable that I keep around are bananas and avocados, and I just tend to eat these a lot. I also keep spinach or kale around for my smoothies, but I rebag them into separate smaller bags as soon as I get them. If my bananas are getting overripe, they get frozen for smoothies.
I also tend to buy canned soups, which last ages.
When I was cooking regularly I’d make a lot of chilis and pasta sauces. They’re good to freeze and they keep well on their own. Chili is arguably better after freezing and having more time to develop.
You can definitely eat pretty healthy and keep plenty of food in the house without constantly chasing waste.
Hazel@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Facebook advertised a professional child kidnapping service to me2·15 days agoThe energy tied up in all of that is so familiar. Just the entire vibe of senseless unmitigated cruelty and mindless nonsensical screaming hits so hard and reminds me so much of some of the shittiest people I’ve encountered in my life. What Joe describes feels like a horrible distillation of something that’s a lot more pervasive than any one ‘school’ or cult or particular group of organized assholes systematically ruining people’s lives. It hit hard. Thanks for sharing it.

This was me this morning but 11am.
What? I asked what makes you certain that the dock isn’t designed for it. If you’re certain, presumably you have a reason for this certainty and already know the specs from looking at it. I can’t see into your mind to know your motivation for making this assertion, which is why I asked.
I assume you have some expertise that makes this obvious to you, so would you like to share it?
I don’t know what planet you’re living on, but I like 3 pillows.
Presumably they’re not frozen in time. The post was made a day ago, so at least several hours before your comment, and the picture was probably not taken minutes before the post was made. I’d imagine they got out of the water long before any of us were aware that they were ever in the water. And given that the picture isn’t accompanied by a second picture of everything in the water or a story about them falling in, it’s reasonable to assume that nothing as notable as that happened.
What makes you say the dock isn’t designed to carry equipment?

Hazel@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto News@lemmy.world•Businesses are raising prices after tariffs — even on unaffected goodsEnglish1·21 days agoThe real value of washing machine prices has gone down as the value of the dollar has gone down. That’s not the same thing as the ticket price going up.
You’re talking about different things in the economy going up at different rates or stagnating. That’s a $268 increase over a period of time in which the value of the $268 that the price went up has plummeted. So, yes, a washing machine costs less in buying power than it did 50 years ago, but it doesn’t actually cost less numerically, in terms of dollar amount.
There certainly are some products that are more responsive to the economy in the short-term, such as fuel, but there’s a pretty big difference between a price holding steady while the economy changes around it to devalue that price and goods that actually respond to market conditions by decreasing the numerical dollar amount charged for them.
As far as washing machines specifically, I see washing machines from Best Buy and Walmart marked somewhere between $600 and $2000, and I would frankly be quite surprised if the average $700 washing machine is anywhere near as durable as a $500 washing machine from the 70s. Most products today, in general, are made to be cheap and disposable rather than to be well constructed for long-term use.
I have a few things from my grandparents’ house when they passed that have been around since at least the 70s and are in extremely good condition that I feel pretty confident saying a modern equivalent of wouldn’t last nearly as long. Like, I have one of my grandfather’s hammers that’s older than I am with a sturdy wooden handle and a solid head that will probably still be perfectly useful when it’s twice as old as it is now. I’ve got a couple of his lock boxes as well that are in absolutely amazing condition. If I bought a hammer today from Walmart, chances are it’s going to come with a rubberized plastic grip that’s going to start wearing down in the next 10 or 20 years. Appliances made in the 70s were also designed to be repaired rather than replaced, whereas today there are only a handful of places that are even willing to do repairs. I had an AC that needed cleaning some routine maintenance and I literally ended up just buying a new one because there was nowhere that was willing to do that work anymore.
A $500 washing machine from the 70s may well still be in operation today. A $700 washing machine today? Good luck getting it to last 20 years let alone 50.
For real. Imagine not turning out to vote and then being shocked that nobody goes out of their way to cater their platform to you.
