Pretty much. It’s not something most of my circle of casual gamers know about. Even the hardcore gamers don’t watch live and usually catch a recording of something specific.
I miss the older marathons. Everything was in person, which I feel had better energy. And the runs were simpler. I don’t really like 4-way races, or controller passing whatever. It’s all a gimmick as far as I’m concerned. I like paying attention to the games and how skilled the runners are.
I agree about some gimmicks like 2 players 1 controller, or playing games with a dance pad or whatever, they seem difficult but still feel like gimmicks to me
4-way races are ok if you’re familiar with the game and speedrun already, but otherwise hard to watch

Early days of twitch I think most big channels were speed runners of some sort like binding of Isaac
