In the lawsuit, the state’s attorney general says ExxonMobil misled consumers into believing that recycling was a viable solution for plastic waste, though it knew otherwise.

  • California Attorney General Rob Bonta is suing ExxonMobil, alleging the company misled consumers into believing that recycling was a viable solution for plastic waste.
  • “Exxon Mobil knew that 95% of the plastic in the blue bin was going to be incinerated, go into the environment or go into a landfill,” Bonta told NBC News.
  • The lawsuit represents a new avenue in the legal fight to hold fossil fuel companies responsible for pollution.

They didn’t lie… they omitted the fact that it would never be profitable to recycle plastics and thus no one would do it.

It can be profitable if products which contain plastic are sold with an upfront fee which pays for the recycling but companies fight against that because it hurts their bottom line.
