Summary

Jake Paul defeated 58-year-old Mike Tyson in an eight-round boxing match, with unanimous scores of 79-73 and 80-72.

The bout, widely criticized as a “stunted show,” highlighted Tyson’s physical decline, including issues with sciatica, a stomach ulcer, and knee problems.

Tyson, once a feared heavyweight champion, struggled to compete, while Paul’s performance lacked effort and authenticity.

Fans, initially supportive of Tyson, grew disenchanted, booing by the final rounds.

Tyson dismissed the fight’s significance beforehand, rejecting the concept of legacy as meaningless. The event was seen as a cynical, contrived spectacle.

I’ll take your word for it. I’ve never really understood the whole idea of boxing being entertaining in the first place.

Skilled athletes are entertaining to watch. Guys that know how fight and do it well, at least. It can be a highly technical, highly skilled competition. Some people are just there to watch two adults beat the piss out of each other. Which, to be fair, is how the sport started.

I can say at least I understand martial arts, even if it’s not my thing, because there’s so much artistry in that and it’s a full body thing whereas boxing is basically just too dudes punching each other. Hit me up when the fighters start using Instant Transmission and Special Beam Cannon and I’ll give it another look

(note - I’m a relative noob for boxing. I attend semi regular classes at a local gym but don’t tend to watch much at all)

Boxing requires a huge depth of skill and not a huge breadth. It’s one of those sports where the basics are 99% of the sport. Definitely makes it seem like 2 dudes just going at each other, but the amount of skill and raw stamina needed to be remotely competitive is insane. Even with gloves, those punches still hurt like a mother fucker and then you’re expected to not only keep going after receiving a few dozen, but expected to dish out your own

Yeah, martial arts makes sense to me. Even (real) wrestling makes sense to me.

I’m sure boxing actually does require a lot of skill, but it just looks like two guys punching each other to me.

Well it’s physical exercise so you’d have to do some to understand it better 😜

Sometimes a joke is just a joke. But you guys want to wave your moral superiority over me, that’s fine. Let me tell you declaring war on every little thing someone says gets tiring. Next time you watch a movie with a fat joke in it are you going to turn it off and write the director a letter?

Nah that neckbeard wanted to “I can’t even” boxing. They can take that somewhere else.

They should be allowed to state an opinion without being attacked. If you are so fragile you can’t tolerate the idea that there are people who aren’t into things you like, you aught to take THAT somewhere else.

Oh, I’m not an admin. I’m not removing his ability to say what he said. Likewise to the whole “people are entitled to their opinions” tripe; nobody is deleting opinions.

But I think you’re confused. I’m “attacking” someone being negative and shitting on boxing. They’re doing the “I don’t even get rap, country suckkksss” thing. You know, where you don’t like something other people like so you pretend it’s utterly bizarre and alien. Like what you’re describing. The behavior you think should be taken elsewhere.

I agree with you. It’s like saying “sportsball” in a condescending way. He was being dismissive when he said I don’t get how it is entertaining in the first place.

I don’t know dude, people have been fighting other people, for sport, for fucking thousands of years, but you don’t understand the “idea of it being entertaining.”

That is straight up, deliberate obtuseness. I am not really a boxing fan, but I thought your response was warranted.

It was awful for a long time, but honestly I’ve come to terms with it. I’m at a stable weight, I’m getting the nutrition I need, I’m working on a solution. It’s going to have to take a back seat since we’re emigrating soon, but it is what it is for now and I’m not dying.

It’s much more awful for my wife and daughter than it is for me to be honest.

Same. Even the match before with the girls seemed like it was an incredible fight for boxing, and it was still just as entertaining as a rock ‘em sock ‘em robot game.

Back in the 70s and early 80s boxing was incredible. Ali was still a contender and Spinx, Fraser, Sugar Ray, Marvelous Marvin, Holmes and Durán lit up their weight classes like a Christmas tree.

Then Tyson entered the sphere and blew the doors off. He was fucking amazing to watch back then. His precision and power were something we’d never seen before and we were in awe.

Pre-Dana White commercialized ufc was crazy to watch. The same octagon, but with almost no rules meant busted arms, legs, etc.

I remember the first time I saw it (on video, pre-streaming days) and it was far more gruesome than boxing ever was.

I think you’re right that UFC ruined boxing.

Also 20 minute or grappling with very little action followed by somebody tapping out for no reason.
