What I was trying to say was that I’m happy to be free of Microsoft’s ability to just sunset an operating system version that I liked and replace it with an even more privacy-disrespecting, ad and AI-bloated nightmare.

Nobara is at least under my control in a significant way. Windows, like so many other software solutions these days wants to treat me like cattle and I want no part in that.

#NobaraGang. I gave Mint a go a few years ago and just never really got anywhere close to replacing my Windows install.

I’ve gotten 90% of all use cases handled by Nobara at this point. The main outlier being my sim racing setup just because according to forums the drivers for all the peripherals are just really not ready for adoption yet. My sim rig will stay on Windows for now as the whole reason I invested in a proper cockpit and peripherals was to reduce the friction involved with enjoying the sims. Also, anti-cheat seems to be a no-go on Linux for now so as an iRacing enjoyer, Linux is out of the question for the time being.

That said, my entire home studio for recording (incl. Hardware peripherals), my daily driver use case and all my other gaming needs are currently met by Nobara. I’m so happy to be able to end my reliance on Microsoft.

Greeting viewers by name? Not in my fucking house. AI should be a tool to rid humanity of undesirable work. Instead its replacing humanity in every field where humanity is the main event. Why the fuck would I ever want to listen to a fucking robot while I watch the Olympics, or anything for that matter?

Buy dumb TVs. Make your next phone a Pixel and install Graphene OS. Ditch Windows/MacOS for Linux. Use ProtonMail. Run a Pi-Hole on your network. Do anything you can to take control of your digital footprint in any way.

Don’t let corporations freely suck your data dry and exploit your life for profit while force feeding you their elaborate fakery. Its impossible to insulate yourself from it all but any step towards digital privacy is the right step to take.

None of those tools has ever made a full releasable track for anyone, just like the tape machine never created music out of nowhere.

It happens when your girlfriend is extremely unstable by default, even more so after a fight, comes to your parents house drunk in the middle of the night and essentially shames you for trying to reject her advances while simultaneously being physical about it by forcing you down and assuming you’re playing some mind game while you try your best to avoid waking your parents in the next room and making a scene cause she’s being loud and borderline belligerent. The sheer embarassment is enough for personal boundaries to get absolutely stomped on in that situation.

Life is living among infinite shades of grey. Every situation has nuance that you might not have thought of.

This sums up my love for the Fediverse.

I’m not using Linux in any enterprise capacity, but the compatibility improvements I’ve seen since the last time I tried out a distro for fun are immense.

So immense infact that I’m migrating all my home studio and gaming stuff over to Linux and making it my official daily driver via Nobara.

I’m honestly amazed by how well music production software and hardware works on Linux now. I’m so relieved because I thought this whole Windows enshittification thing was just another part of my life where I seemingly have no control over being made into a product and having all of my data sold constantly.

A recent migration to GrapheneOS and this new discovery of Linux’s amazing capabilities for my use case are such a breath of fresh air. I now have the choice to reject the exploitative practices of these tech companies that have zero respect for people and that makes me happy.

The more we use and recommend Linux the more of a chance we get of first party support in the future!

This is actually nuts. I watched a video breakdown of this blog post and my jaw was on the floor. Super interesting stuff.

All I know is that its a feature of GrapheneOS, and is the main reason why I switched over to it.

It just doesn’t allow you to use the Android Device Policy work profile which makes it so you can’t log into Slack for work (for example) if it depends on the work policy spyware being active on your phone.

I get that for some people that’s a non-starter but for me who vehemently supports and exercises my Right To Disconnect, not having spyware on my phone for work is a good riddance.

That’s what the Google Play Sandbox is for.

The only functionality I’ve lost after migrating to a Pixel with GrapheneOS is the Android Device Policy (aka Work Profiles, the spyware your employer requires to use certain work apps)

Consider Nobara for gaming!

Add Lutris to that list. If anything doesn’t work in WINE, try installing via Lutris. My AxeFX’s GUI now works flawlessly thanks to an older version of WINE running in Lutris.

I’m running REAPER and some outboard gear GUIs on Nobara Linux with no issues so far. VSTs run thanks to yabridge and Lutris/WINE handles the GUI stuff. I bet you’ll be able to migrate without too much trouble.

Heart Machine rules. Hyper Light Drifter is my absolute favourite game. Would love to see them expand on HLD but I’m also looking forward to these new endeavours.

We’ll agree to disagree I suppose. The alternatives don’t necessarily have to be FOSS either. A perfect example of a viable alternative to a predatory “industry standard” exists in the audio production world; REAPER.

When I was in College, Pro Tools was the required software. Pro Tools at the time was a walled garden ecosystem, trapping anyone who sunk their hard earned cash into an environment rife with anti-consumer practices, hardware brand restrictions and invasive DRM.

It cost me over $600 CAD at the time for a bundle containing a feature-limited copy of Pro Tools and a Digidesign MBox.

Meanwhile, REAPER’s noncommercial license was $60. That $60 got you a full featured copy of the DAW with support for the next two full version upgrades (which turned out to be nearly a decade of updates). You could also use any hardware interfaces you desired without restriction.

REAPER also has a free trial that is full-featured. No restrictions at all, even the trial length is unlimited. Why? Because they respect the consumer and trust that if you find value in the software you’ll support their work by paying for a copy. That purchase is one of the best I’ve ever made.

In my experience, REAPER was equally as capable as Pro Tools or any other DAW on the market at the time. As of now I’d wager it’s the superior product.

A world where consumers are respected currently exists, its just not in the hands of the corporate world. The best way to make a better future for everyone in the software world is to not put up with anti-consumer practices and engage with companies and developers that respect our time and hard earned cash instead of treating us like cattle.
